The Latin word for lavender means to wash, which makes it only appropriate that one would use lavender as part of ones skincare routine. Every skin type can benefit from the nourishing properties of lavender. Lavender products are available in many forms, ranging from essential oils to soaps and lotions, and can treat various skin ailments. Some of the best skincare benefits of lavender are:
Acne Fighter
Lavender is an all-natural remedy for acne that is often recommended by dermatologists. It has calming properties that can be felt immediately, and is also anti-inflammatory to help reduce redness and swelling. Lavender also has antioxidants, which have been shown to detoxify the skin
and thereby inhibit growth of bacteria. As part of a regular skincare routine, lavender helps to fight the initial acne-causing infection, thereby alleviating the problem. The easiest way to use lavender to fight acne is to apply a small amount of essential oil to a cotton ball and swab it on the infected area.
Toner
When used as a toner, lavender has the ability to firm and tighten skin by increasing blood flow to the face. The antioxidants in lavender can also protect the skin from free radicals
in the environment that contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. To make a simple homemade toner, simple add a few drops of lavender oil to a spray bottle full of water. If you don’t have lavender oil handy, it is possible to make your own! Simply bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, then remove from heat and add several sprigs of dried lavender or lavender buds. Allow the mixture to steep for several hours, and then pour into a spray bottle. Apply to the face after cleansing, and follow with moisturizer.
Moisturizer
Lavender oil is one of few essential oils that is moisturizing, rather than drying, making it ideal for people with dry skin. When diluted in a bit of coconut oil, it makes an excellent facial moisturizer that will seal in moisture for the whole day or night. This is a good remedy for the itching and flaking often associated with acne breakouts. Though it may seem counterintuitive to put oil on your face, coconut oil by itself is an excellent, non-greasy moisturizer that will leave skin soft and hydrated, and also happens to be an ideal carrier oil for lavender. Alternatively, you can add a couple of drops of oil to your current moisturizer, facial cream, or under eye
cream.
